- At the 1980 Winter
- Olympics, in Lake Placid,
- New York, Eric Heiden of
- the United States
- competed in all five of the
- menΓÇÖs long-track speed skating races. He
- won them all! He became the first person
- ever to win five individual gold medals at
- one Olympics, winter or summer. (Swimmer
- Mark Spitz won seven gold medals in 1972,
- but three were for relays.) No U.S. Winter
- Olympic team since 1932 had won five gold
- medals.

- Eric grew up in Madison, Wisconsin. Like
- many kids in that area of the country, he
- played ice hockey as a boy. Later, he
- began to concentrate on speed skating.
